John P. Portelli, originaire de Malte, est professeur émérite au département d’éducation sur la justice sociale à l’université de Toronto. Outre 11 livres académiques, il a publié onze recueils de poésie, deux collections de nouvelles (une traduite en anglais et publiée sous le titre Everyday Encounters) et un roman, Everyone but Faiza (Burlington, ON : Word and Deed, et Malta : Horizons, 2021). Son œuvre littéraire a été traduite en italien, roumain, grec, farsi, arabe, coréen, anglais, espagnol, portugais et polonais. Sa collection, Here Was (2023) a été traduite et publiée en roumain, arabe, italien, farsi et turc. Here Was a été sélectionné pour le Prix du Club de lecture canadien en octobre 2024. Cinq de ses livres ont été présélectionnés pour le prix littéraire annuel du Malta Book Council. Ses derniers recueils sont The Shadow : Poèmes pour Gaza (octobre 2024), co-écrit avec Ahmed Miqdad, et Unsilenced : Poems for Gaza (2025). Il vit maintenant entre Toronto et Malte, et au-delà !

John P. Portelli originally from Malta, is a professor emeritus in the Department of Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto. Besides 11 academic books, he has published eleven collections of poetry, two collections of short stories (one translated into English and published as Everyday Encounters), and a novel, Everyone but Faiza (Burlington, ON: Word and Deed, and Malta: Horizons, 2021). His literary work has been translated into Italian, Romanian, Greek, Farsi, Arabic, Korean, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Polish. His collection, Here Was (2023) has been translated into and published in Romanian, Arabic, Italian, Farsi and Turkish. Here Was was short-listed for the Canadian Book Club Award in October 2024. Five of his books have been short-listed for the Malta Book Council Annual Literary Award. His latest collections are The Shadow: Poems for Gaza (October 2024), co-authored with Ahmed Miqdad, and Unsilenced: Poems for Gaza (2025). He now lives between Toronto and Malta, and beyond!

Swamped love
Because of your swamped love you believe
that you own my wretched body forever
today you told me that I have a total look
unlike this summer burried in an enigmatic wind
drowned in a sea awaiting another spell
it is so trying to garner the smell of the jasmine
of your body when my nostrils are filled
to the brim with you. What is the point
of such empty dreams?
And the sun struggled to appear between the clouds.
