River

The river sketches the map of civilization
in the mountains.
With ripples of its current
it carves meanders,
and, breaking through the caverns of hills,
reaches the plain-lands.
To behold the civilization it has shaped,
and, the life smeared upon it,
the river
merges into a sea deeper, lower still,
then turns toward the mountains, drawing a portrait of height.

The river does not flow alone;
along with it drift human dreams—
at times they burst like bubbles and vanish,
at times they surge, unsettled, into floods,
and elsewhere they bloom into color, into life.

The river is water’s perpetual journey,
yet the tangled dreams coursing within it
are not destined simply to sink
into the sea’s depth;
to lift those dreams into the sky,
it deepens its companionship with the sun
and drives clouds across the heavens.
Though it seems only to descend into depth,
the river is the maker of a civilization rising higher.

Like a brush that paints the image of life,
the river runs on, the earth its canvas—
a bridge between the height of mountains
and the depth of the sea,
the river carries the whole of life in its flow.
