CENTERED

In the middle of my mind,
a pond.

Around it, soft pebbles,
green grass,
an egret.

Within the pond,
ripples, and goldfish
that someone forgot
to move into the aquarium.

And within the goldfish are weeds,
green homes of toads and tadpoles.

Within the weeds too,
coolness and mud,
shadows from an entire boyhood.
Within the weeds are daydreams
that goldfish swallow
and kingfishers dive for.

An egret hops.

The mind is a flutter.

I see the pond no more.

I only feel its coolness on my skin,
its caress becoming dreams
floating into a black forest
inside my sleep,
searching for a grandmother.

Ajay M.K.
