Alexis Bernaut is a poet, translator, musician, and editor. He also runs the short story collection Miniatures at Magellan & Cie publishers. His poetry has been published in France and abroad, and he is the author of collections Au matin suspendu (2012) and Un miroir au cœur du brasier (2020). He translated US poets Jack Hirschman, Sam Hamill, Ian Boyden, and Margo Berdeshevsky, Canadian poet Robert Bringhurst, and Trinidadian novelist Earl Lovelace.

LE CHIEN
Le chien aboie à l’écho de la montagne
qu’il lui rende son aboiement –
Tu sais, le chien
moi aussi j’ai aboyé
à mes rêves, à mes amis, mes quatre murs
et même mes dieux, si j’en avais eu
je leur aurais aboyé dessus –
J’ai aboyé à la vie
espérant qu’elle me rendrait
l’écho de mon premier cri
J’ai aboyé
moi aussi
The dog barks at the mountain’s echo:
“Give me my barking back”
You know, dog
I’ve barked too
barked at my dreams, friends, barked at my walls
even my gods, had I had any
I would have barked at them
I’ve barked at life
hoping that it might return
the echo of my first scream
I, too,
have barked
